The cardamom plant originates from India. A striking, large leafed plant, growing to 10 feet in height. The seeds from the cardomom plant have been used for cooking for many hundreds of years and still popular in the western kitchens. The cardomom essential oil has warming, invigorating qualitys. Most of the commercially produced cardomom oil comes from Guatemala. The cardomom oil is extracted from the dried seeds of the cardomom by steam distillation. It is either a colourless liquid or pale yellow and has a sweet, warm and spicy aroma. The oil is often used in baths, massage or in vaporizers with its warming, uplifting and invigorating effects.

Latin name: Elettaria cardamomum.

Family: Zingiberaceae.

Plant part used: Reeds/Seeds.

Extraction: From distillation of the reeds and seeds.

Aroma: Sweet and spicy almost like bitter-lemons.

Blends well with: Bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, orange, geranium, lavender, neroli, Rose, myrtle, pine, rosewood, verbena and ylang ylang.
