Basil essential oil was often used by the ancient Greek nobles for its fragrant perfume. The Egyptians used the aromatic fragrance of basil in there offerings to the gods and mixed basil with essences of myrrh and incense. The basil is native to Africa and the seychells and is now grown in Europe as a popular culinary herb.

Therapeutic effects of Basil oil: The basil oil is ideal as a nerve tonic, to help lift fatigue, anxiety and depression. Also the basil oil is good for colds, fever, gout and indigestion.

How to use the oil: Basil oil can be used in baths and massage, inhalation. When the oil is used in the bath or smoothed over the body it can have an invigorating effect. When used with other essential oils such as thyme it acts as a powerful antiseptic.

Latin name: Ocimum basilicum.

Source: By steam distillation of the flowering tops and leaves from the herb, native to the Middle East and Asia. The plants that produce the essential oil are mainly cultivated throughout Europe.

Description and aroma: A pale yellow or colourless oil with a fresh, light, sweet and spicy fragrance and a balsamic undertone. The effect of the odour is at first stimulating, giving away to a warm, comforting feeling.

Key qualities: Restorative, tonic, antidepressant, refreshing, uplifting, fortifying, purifying, clearing, warming, cephalic, stupefying (in excess).

Blends well with: Bergamot, citronella, clary sage, cypress, geranium, lime, oakmoss, orange and frankincense.
