The palmarosa essential oil is a close relative of the lemongrass and citronella essential oil, because it comes from the same plant. Palmarosa is also related to gingergrass. The palmarosa plant grows wild in India and Pakistan. Now the plant is grown for commercial purposes in India, Indonesia, the Comoros Islands, East Africa and Brazil, all of these countries produce the oil. Palmarosa essential oil is produced from the leaves of the plant, this can either fresh or dried, by stean distillation. The oil is a pale yellow, green colour and has a lovely sweet floral aroma. Used often in the production of soaps and many bath products as well as flavouring tobacco. Most of the oil produced is exported to Europe, America and Japan.

Latin name: Cymbopogon martini.

Family: Gramineae.

Plant part used: The grass and the leaves of the palmarosa plant is used before the flowers of the plant appear. The highest yield of oil is obtained about a week after the grass has been cut and fully dried.

Extraction: Extraction of the oil is by steam distillation of the spreading leaves and grass.

Aroma: Has an aroma of floral, sweet, slightly dry, with ahint of rose.

Blends well with: Bergamot, Chamomile,Citronella, Jasmine, Lavender, Lemon, Lime, Petitgrain, bergamot, citronella, geranium, melissa, orange, sandalwood, violet, ylang ylang and Rose.



Properties: Antiseptic, antiviral, febrifuge, bacteriacide. Body: Acts as a tonic to the digestive system and is said to have a beneficial effect on pathogens in the intestinal flora. This could be therefore be useful in dysentery and has strengthening effect on stomach muscles. Helpful when the body is overheated and could possibly be helpful in cases of fever reducing temperature. Mind: Palmarosa has a calming and uplifting effect on emotions. Can also help to refesh and clarify the mind.

Using Palmarosa Essential Oil

Palmarosa essential oil is one of the less expensive of the essential oil, but palmarosa is one of the valuable oils for skin care and helping to ease mental tension. It is a good essential oil for all skin types. In skin care palmarosa helps stimulate the growth of healthy skin cells and regulate sebum production.

Palmarosa Oil For Blending
Palmarosa blends well with floral oils, woody and citrus oils, giving a warm note to a wide variety of blends. However, take care with the proportion you use, as it can overpower the other oils in a blend unless used sparingly.

Relaxing Massage Blend
5ml diluted palmarosa oil
10ml sweet almond oil
2 drops pure sandalwood essential oil
2 drops pure cedarwood essential oil

Enlivening Massage Oil Blend
5ml diluted palmarosa oil
10ml sweet almond oil
2 drops pure lemon essential oil
2 drops pure pine essential oil

Massage Oil For Hands And Wrists.
This is an excellent recipe for healing your chapped skin, improving circulation and relaxing overworked hands. Massage this blend into hands, wrists and the arms to alleviate keyboard stress, too.

1 tsp diluted palmarosa oil
1 tsp sweet almond oil
1 drop pure camomile essential oil
1 drop pure lavender essential oil

As well as being antiseptic, hydrating and soothing to inflamed skin, essential oils are relatively inexpensive and will have a long lasting fragrance. Light And Easy Hand Lotion.
This is a great daytime hand cream, which is quickly absorbed. Use regularly to help prevent dryness.

25ml base or unperfumed body lotion
2 evening primrose oil capsules
4 drops pure palmarosa essential oil
6 drops pure sandalwood essential oil

Aromatherapy Uses



Aromatic Salt Bath
Try this salt bath. The salt helps relieve general aches, while the oils sooth nervous tension and restore energy. Add the sea salt to the bath while the water runs. Once the bath is full, add the essential oils and stir the water to disperse the droplets. Lie in the bath for 15 minutes. Light a fragranced candle or oil burner and relax.

6tbsp sea salt
2 drops pure palmarosa essential oil
2 drops pure coriander essential oil
2 drops pure petitgrain essential oil

Palmarosa oil can be used for making your own hand and body lotions, hand creams and massage oil blends, bath oils and relaxing salt baths.
