Sage essential oil is an extreamely stimulating essential oil and is widely used in cooking and products like gargles and poultices. The sage comes in many species which are widely distributed throughout the world, having many used including culinary to hallucinogenic. Salvia officinalis is the most important and the one we sell at Powells Aromatherapy, it has been cultivated for many thousands of years. The sage is native to southern Europe. The Romans called sage 'herba sacra; which means 'sacred herb'. The sage essential oil has purple-greenleaves and blue flowers and will reach about two feet. The sage essential oil is distilled from the leaves and flowers of the plant. The essential is a yellow colour oil. Sage essential oil has a top perfumery note and a green, balsamic, aromatic smell, an uplifting tonic, warming and relaxing. The sage essential oil can sometimes be more expensive due to the labour involved in the preperation.

Latin name:Salvia officinalis.

Family: Labiatae.

Plant part used: The sage essential oil is obtained from the herb, leaves and flowers. The leaves etc are dried in the hot sun before distilling..

Extraction: The method of extracting the sage essential oil is by steam distillation.

Properties of Sage Essential Oil: Antigalactagogue, antispasmodic, antiseptic, Nervous: Makes a good nerve tonic. Muscular: Aches and pains in the joints, and all rheumatic conditions. Obesity: Congestion, fluid retention. Skin: Sluggish or congested skins, ulcers may be eased, wounds, sores, dermatitis, psoriasis, tonic.

Aroma: The oil has a clear, herbal and sharp aroma.

Blends well with: Bergamot, Eucalyptus, Neroli, Orange, Peppermint, Bay, Geranium, Ginger, Lavender, Melissa and Rosemary.
