Latin name: Mentha spicata.
The spearmint plant reaches about three feet and has purple flowers with wrinkled and spiked leaves. Spearmint essential oil does not contain menthol like peppermint does. The spearmint plant is mainly cultivated in Asia, America and Britain, it originally grew in the Mediterranean region and in North Africa. Mainly used by the ancient Greeks in their bath water as a tonic. The Romans introduced spearmint into Britain where it was used to stop milk curdling. In the medieval times spearmint oil was used for helping to heal sore gums and teeth whitening.

Family: Labiatae.

Plant part used: Herbs, flowering tops and leaves.

Extraction: By steam distillation of the leaves, flowering tops of the herb.

Properties: Antispasmodic, antipruritic, carminative, restorative, stimulant. Mind: Spearmint essential oil will help to stimulate a tired mind. Body: Helpful with digestive problems, may also help to relax stomach muscles and nausea. Effect on skin: The herb may provide relief from pruritus an itching of the skin - spearmint essential oil can also be helpful for scabs and sores.

Aroma: Has a fresh mild mint arama, similar to peppermint, though it is slightly sweeter.

Blends well with: Basil, lemon, grapefruit, peppermint, Jasmine, tea tree, tangerine, vetiver and Rosemary.
