Star Anise Essential Oil (illicium verum)

Star anise is native to southeast China, the evergreen tree of the star anise reaches a height of up to 40 feet. The fruit is star-shaped, with between five and thirteen seed pockets radiating from the center. The main source for the essential oil is from China although some star anise comes from India. Star anise has always had a long history for traditional use in Chineese medicine. The star anise essential oil is a clear liquid tinged with yellow and has a very sweet, just like liquorice aroma. The oil is produced from the fruits by steam distillation. The oil is used extensively by the pharmaceutical industry as flavouring, making certain medications more palatable.
