Sunflower oil is a light oil rich in vitamins and minerals. It can be enriched by the addition of more exotic oils. Sunflower is a lovely fine oil which is used in blends for body massage. It contains vitamin E.

The plant: The sunflower originated in South America, where it was worshipped by the Aztecs as a representation of the sun. The plant is today grown in the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, India, Argentina, the Mediterranean countries and the USA. Large quantitys are now grown in the South of France. The sunflower can grow to about 15 feet high with large flower heads that can vary from 3 inches in diameter to 15 inches. They will grow in almost any soil as long as there is pleanty of water, so sunflowers are used to drain boggy areas and sunflowers like full sun.

Therapeutic properties: The oil has a softening and moisturizing effect on the skin and used for massage. Beneficial for skin complaints and bruises.

The oil: Quality organic sunflower oil is often used as the macerating medium for calendula and other plants.

Extraction method: The oil is obtained from organically grown plants by cold pressing.

Latin name: Helianthus annuus.

Family: Asteraceae (Compositae).

Contains vitamins: A, D, E and minerals calcium.

Odour: The oil is essentially odourless.
