The turmeric essential oil is from a tropical perennial herb that grows to 1 metre in height, with a deep orange colour thick root, lanceolate root leaves tapering at each end, and yellow flowers. The herb is closely related to ginger, that is native to southern Asia and is extensively cultivated in India, Indonesia, Jamaica, China and Haiti. The oil is usually distilled in China, India and Japan. Tumeric is used as a household spice, especially for curry powder, High in vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C. Extensively used in home medicine and in Chinese herbalism. The turmeric oil is extracted by steam distillation from the 'cured' rhizome-boiled, cleaned and sun-dried. The oil is a yellow-orange colour with fresh, spicy and woody aroma.

Latin name: Curcuma longa.

Plant part used: The roots of the plant are used to obtain the turmeric essential oil.

Extraction: By steam distillation.

Aroma: The essential oil has a medium, sharp and spicy aroma.

Blends well with: Bergamot, cedarwood, cypress, silver fir, cananga, labdanum, ginger, cassie, clary sage, mimosa and pine. Also blends well with the heavier citrus oils.
