The spicy-smelling west Indian bay essential oil is extracted from the dried leaves and berries of the bay rum tree and is yellowish-brown in colour with shiny leathery leaves produce clusters of yellowish-green flowers in spring. The bay tree will grow to about 60 feet in height and is evergreen. The aroma of the bay essential oil is a strong, masculine, clove like smell, woody, warm and a stimulating scent. Roman emperors wore sprigs of bay, known as Laurus nobilis (Roma laurel), not only was this a sign of wealth, but would help to ward off evil spirits, and after gastronomic banquets it was chewed as a breath freshener by Greek prietesses. Today the oil is used in perfume and exotic bath essences for its uplifting effects.
