Fractionated coconut oil is the one which is commercially avaliable and often used in aromatherapy. Coconut oil is frequently used in massage creams. With a high proportion of medium chain fatty acids make the oil more easily absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract. Coconut makes the skin smooth and satin-like. A light non-greasy, non-staining oil, ideal for use in massage.

The plant: The Coconut palm tree grows to about 80 feet high and is now grown in many tropical countries, especially Africa and the south east of Asia. When the tree is fully grown it will produce about 80 coconuts per year, although some varietys can produce up to 200 coconuts per year.

Therapeutic properties: The oil is frequently used in massage because of its emollient properties. .

Extraction method: Coconut oil is obtained by cold pressing the flesh found inside the shell of the coconut and fractionated and a clear liquid results.

Latin name: Cocos nucifera.

Family: Palmae.

Odour: Odourless and tasteless.
