Nutmeg essential oil is cultivated in the West Indies, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. The tree usually grown to about 25 feet high and has aromatic leaves. The essential oil of nutmeg is obtained from the dried seeds by steam distillation. The oil is white or pale yellow in colour with a sharp, spicy, rather warming, musky nutmeg aroma. Nutmeg has long been used in flavouring foods, as an ingredient in the making of dental products, perfumes and hair lotions. Nutmeg will invigorate the mind and is said to be a good tonic for the hair.

Latin name: Myristica fragrans.

Family: Myristicaceae.

Plant part used: The nutmeg essential oil is obtained from the 'nut' of the tree.

Extraction: The essential is obtained by steam distillation.

Aroma: Nutmeg has a spicy, sharp and a rather musky and warming fragrance. The essential oil is an ideal addition to winter oil blends for warming and an oil to use in an oil burner of diffuser, especially at Christmas or the winter months. It can be added to other oils like clove, orange or clove and orange.

Blends well with: All of the Citrus oils, lavender, cinnamon, cypress, frankincense, tea tree, lime, lemon, black pepper, clove, ginger and ylang ylang.
