Both peppermint essential oil and peppermint tea have their uses and are good remedies to have in the cupboard. Peppermint has a cool, refreshing, strong, penetrating menthol scent which is long lasting and only a small amount is needed in blends. Has a perfumery top note. There are many varieties of peppermint but the one most used by aromatherapy is mentha piperita the one we sell here. The herb grows to about 3 feet. The essential oil of peppermint is obtained through steam distilation of the leaves and flowering tops. Produced in the USA and England. Peppermint is used for flavouring and fragrancing on a vast scale, enhancing food, peppermint tea, drinks and toothpaste to many other products. Peppermint was prized in Japan and China for many centuries and has been found in Egyptian tombs dating back to 1000BC. Traditionally, people drank peppermint in tea or chewed the leaves.

Peppermint for clearing negativity: The powerful, piercing fragrance is refreshing and uplifting, helping to dispel lethargy and gloom. An excellent oil for counteracting sluggish energy.

How to use: To help clear a headache, apply a small amount of diluted peppermint oil around the back of the head, just below the skull. Also try stroking a tiny amount up into the hairline near the temples. Peppermint tea ia a good remedy for heartburn, indigestion and stomach cramps, or stroke 5ml of diluted essential oil over the abdomen.

Inhale 3 drops of pure essential oil from a tissue for nausea or jetlag; 4 drops diluted in a little grapeseed or almond oil in a warm bath can revive you if jetlagged, or pick you up before a night out. Rub 2.5ml diluted peppermint oil into each temple to ease headaches. To beat constipation, indigestion, sickness or diarrhoea, add 1 drop to a little unperfumed or base body lotion and massage over your abdomen. This recipe also helps cool sunburn and hot, itchy skin conditions. For aching feet, add 2 drops diluted in a little grapeseed or almond oil to a foot bath; and if you are driving long distances put a couple of drops on a tissue and place in front of the air vents to help you stay alert.

This invigorating essential oil can be used in pre-exercise rubs to keep muscles supple and thus reduce the possibility of injury.

How to use for natural sports oil: Sprinkle a few drops onto a flannel and rub over the body in the shower prior to working-out. Combine 5 drops of pure peppermint essential oil with 5 drops of pure cypress essential oil in 4tbsp of carrier oil for a stimulating massage oil to rub into the muscles and prime them for exercise. Mix a couple of drops into a handful of sea salt to make a deep cleansing and invigorating foot scrub to refresh feet after exercise. For greater benefits toss the remaining salt scrub into a basin or bucket of warm water and soak the feet for 15 minutes before patting dry and dusting with natural talc.

Properties: Peppermint oil has many properties, analgesic, anaesthetic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, decongestant, expectorant, stimulant. Mind: On the mind peppermint essential oil has a cooling nature and seems to relieve states of anger, hysteria and the helping of trembling. Makes an excellent oil for mental fatigue and depression. Body: Has an action of cooling when hot and warming when cold. This can make peppermint a very good remedy for colds by halting mucus and fevers, it is also good for encouraging perspiration. Reputedly has an effect on bronchitis, cholera, pneumonia, asthma and tuberculosis. With cooling a action it seems to ease headaches, migraines and toothache. A great remedy for aching feet. Effects on the skin: Due to its capillary constriction, it is coolingin action and can also help to relieve itching, inflammation and also sunburn. Helps to soften the skin, remove blackheads and is good on greasy hair and skin.

Oil cominations: Peppermint oil combines perfectly with eucalyptus and rosemary oils, which reinforce its effects, and warming and penetrating marjoram oil.

Blends well with: Cedarwood, chamomile, cypress, silver fir, lavender, niaouli, eucalyptus, mandarin, marjoram, myrrh, rosemary, pine and tea tree.
