Soya oil is extracted from the soya bean plant, is light, nourishing and easily absorbed. It is especially suited to oily skin. The soya oil is often used in manufacturing soaps, bath oils and shampoos.

The plant: The soya plant has been grown in China for some 5000 years, although the soya bean was not used in the western hemisphere until the 19th century and first imported in to England in 1908. It is now one of the most important oilseed crops. The plant grows to about 4 feet high and bears hairy pods.

Extraction method: Soya beans have a low oil content (20%) so the oil is obtained by solvent extraction.

Latin name: Glycine max.

Contains vitamins: A good source of E, although not as rich as wheatgerm or sunflower oils. Soya beans contain vitamins A and B complex and soya is one of the few foods to contain all 22 health giving amino acids.
